Avatar 2 or Avatar: The Way of Water is scheduled to hit cinemas in winter 2022. However, successful director James Cameron is now hinting that he does not want to finish the film series himself.
- On December 14, 2022, the sequel to the worldwide success “Avatar” should finally come to cinemas.
- “Avatar: The Way of Water” is just one of several sequels to expand the Avatar series into a film epic.
- However, director James Cameron is now hinting that he may not see the series through to the end.
13 years after the first release of “Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora” the success story of the film is to be continued with ” Avatar: The Way of Water ” in December 2022. And fans can be happy, because further films in the series are already being planned, with the 3rd “Avatar” film already having the green light. In an interview, director James Cameron has now hinted that he might give up the lead in further films.
According to Cameron himself, “Avatar 2: The Way of Water” will only be the first of four sequels. In fact, the 3rd “Avatar” film has probably already been shot, although after the shooting of the mostly animated films, the majority of the work is only now waiting.
Cameron has now spoken to Empire magazine about his future plans for the film series and hints that he may not be involved until the end.
The director explains that the films are simply very complex and time-consuming and that he can’t do anything else at the moment. At the same time, however, he still has ideas for other exciting projects that he would like to devote himself to more besides “Avatar”.
So maybe in the future, after the third or fourth film, he’ll hand over the reins to another director. We will then see whether James Cameron can really let go of the world he has created in the future. Luckily, Cameron himself does not seem to be 100 percent convinced of his plan to resign soon.
Avatar 2: Start Date

“Avatar 2” should start in cinemas on December 15, 2021. This date was actually far enough in the future to be able to assume an actual publication in the run-up to Christmas 2021, but things were to be different. The Corona crisis meant that filming had to be interrupted for a long time, which ultimately led to another postponement.
“Avatar 2” was postponed by a whole year, to December 14, 2022 . This will hardly be due to the fact that filming is taking an extra year, instead Disney plans to always release the upcoming “Avatar” films in December and this plan has not changed. In the table you will find the dates for all “Avatar” sequels.
Avatar 2: Storyline
12 years have passed since the events of “Avatar: Pandora’s Adventures”. Jake Sully has started a family with Neytiri and together they explore Pandora. They get to know new tribes, for example the freediving clan Metkayina. But then the evil organization RDA returns, again led by Colonel Miles Quaritch. It is not yet known how Quaritch, who died in the first film, will return in the sequels.
Avatar 2: Production
As James Cameron has confirmed, “Avatar 2” is already in the can and the third part is almost finished. The second part is currently still in post-production and since “Avatar” is technically very demanding, the post-production will take a lot of time.
To realize his vision for the “Avatar” films, Cameron filmed underwater, which required new technology and required actors to hold their breath for long periods of time. 70-year-old Sigourney Weaver says she trained with Marines to be able to hold her breath for up to six minutes, allowing Cameron to shoot longer scenes underwater.
