“Avatar 2: The Way of Water” will be released in December 2022, but many film fans do not believe in the success of the blockbuster sequel. But one should never underestimate James Cameron!
- ” Avatar: The Way of Water ” is intended to build on the successes of its predecessor.
- Not an easy task, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s director James Cameron.
- We will reveal why the second “Avatar” film also has a lot of potential.
“Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora” is currently, 13 years after its first release, the most successful film in the world. Of course it can be argued that this title actually belongs to “Gone with the Wind”, after all the cult film was significantly more successful if you keep the inflation in mind.
In addition, “Avatar” has been released in cinemas several times, and another re-release is planned for September 2022, which means that Fox and Disney are cheating a little to further increase the film’s revenues. But still: Nobody can deny that “Avatar” was successful and popular.
Nevertheless, the general opinion on James Cameron’s film has changed in recent years. While “Avatar” was initially thought to be a visually impressive science fiction film with a predictable plot, “Avatar” is now hardly left a good hair and the upcoming sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” is only wearily smiled at.
James Cameron knows what he’s doing
Many forget that the first “Avatar” film and even “Titanic” were not taken seriously before they were released. So it should be pretty clear by now that you shouldn’t bet against James Cameron.
There is a well-known story of the meeting in which Cameron proposed a sequel to Ridley Scott’s Alien. To do this, he wrote the word “alien” on a chalkboard, then added an “s” to the end, and then drew two dashes through the “s,” creating a dollar sign. The producers were convinced and rightly so: “Aliens” was a sensational success. Even if you don’t like Cameron’s films, his winning formula is unbeatable.
No innovations in “Avatar 2”?
It can certainly be argued that “Avatar” lured the audience into the cinemas primarily with the impressive 3D images and thus started a 3D hype that has ebbed away significantly in recent years. “Avatar: The Way of Water” now lacks this special incentive, because now you can already imagine quite exactly what to expect in the cinema.
Pandora and the Na’vi will of course be even better, even more lifelike, and the focus on Cameron’s beloved underwater world promises particularly spectacular 3D shots, but is that enough for “Avatar 2” to even come close to its predecessor?
The first trailer speaks volumes
13 years after its release, “Avatar” seems to have barely played a part in pop culture, but the first teaser trailer proves otherwise. The trailer was viewed 148.6 million times in the first 24 hours. None of the “Star Wars” films released by Disney could achieve such a high value on the first day with a trailer.
So the interest in “Avatar: The Way of Water” is there and in the coming months Disney still has plenty of time to continue to fuel the Pandora fever with new pictures and trailers. Therefore, nobody should be surprised if one day “Avatar 2” finds itself at the top of the list of the highest grossing films of all time.
Avatar 2: Start Date

“Avatar 2” should start in cinemas on December 15, 2021. This date was actually far enough in the future to be able to assume an actual publication in the run-up to Christmas 2021, but things were to be different. The Corona crisis meant that filming had to be interrupted for a long time, which ultimately led to another postponement.
“Avatar 2” was postponed by a whole year, to December 14, 2022 . This will hardly be due to the fact that filming is taking an extra year, instead Disney plans to always release the upcoming “Avatar” films in December and this plan has not changed. In the table you will find the dates for all “Avatar” sequels.
