‘American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer’

Robert Julius Oppenheimer is an American theoretical physicist who is often credited as the ‘Father of the atomic bomb’ for his role in the Manhattan Project. The Project led to the creation of the first nuclear bomb which revolutionized science and modern warfare.

The book ‘American Prometheus’ which was published in 2005, delves into the personal and professional elements of Robert’s life. The book is based on extensive research done by the authors, including interviews with his colleagues, friends, and family members. The book also contains traces from previously classified government documents to provide a more historically accurate context.

The authors trace Robert’s early life, his educational background, and his rise as one of the leading influential physicists of his time. More focus is on the Manhattan Project, where he was appointed as the scientific director of the Los Alamos Laboratory. The book also includes details of the challenges faced by Oppenheimer during the development of the bomb in World War II.

The book also delves into the incidents post World War II. It covers the suspicions and investigations around Oppenheimer and his political beliefs as well as associations. It also follows Oppenheimer’s security clearance revocation which had an impact on his personal and professional life.
