With locations in Berlin, “Fantastic Beasts 3″ is a special eye-catcher for German fans. We go in search of clues and uncover the real filming locations and role models.
Whether you’re a Muggle or a wizard, it was a long wait for fans of the Harry Potter world until the third and latest installment of the “Fantastic Beasts” series hit theaters. The first two films took us to the USA and France, and now we’re off to Germany and Bhutan. Berlin in particular should be a special highlight for German fans. But do Credence (Ezra Miller) and Albus (Jude Law) really duel on the streets of the German capital? And where exactly is the German Ministry of Magic?
Fantastic Beasts 3: Filming locations and where to find them
In order to shoot “Fantastic Beasts 3,” the team was on the road on several continents. We took a closer look at the most important stops.
Berlin
The German capital is the setting for a few significant scenes. For example, on the streets of Berlin there is a fierce duel between Albus and the angry Credence. We also see Bunty (Victoria Yaetes) commissioning copies of Newt’s (Eddie Redmayne’s) zoology case in a leather goods store. But probably most impressive is the monumental Ministry of Magic.
All of this footage, however, was not shot in the real Berlin, but at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, United Kingdom. Harry Potter fans are probably already familiar with this name, as it’s not only where new films are shot, but also where the legendary sets of the magical world are put on display. The former Rolls-Royce factory now serves as a Harry Potter museum, attracting fans from all over the world for the Studio Tour. Nevertheless, at least the Ministry has a real-world role model, namely the striking Chilehaus in Hamburg. China and Bhutan
The footage from Southeast Asia was also largely shot in the studio and brought to life digitally, such as the small Bhutanese town at the foot of Temple Mountain, where the election of the new head of the magicians* takes place. For the film’s opening scenes, which show the Quilin’s picturesque habitat, drone footage was used that was shot around the Ban Gioc Detain waterfall as well as the Li River. However, to make the action as authentic as possible, a “real” waterfall was then recreated in the UK, which served as “refreshment” for Eddie Redmayne in particular.

New York, Hogsmeade and Hogwarts
For the well-known locations in New York, first and foremost Jacob’s bakery, as well as Albus’ place of work and residence Hogwarts and Hogsmeade, it was possible to fall back on the sets of the first parts and partly digitally renew or expand them. The Hogsmeade from the Studio Tour in Leavesden was also helpful in scanning the scenery and recreating it accordingly.
