I.S.S. Movie Trailer: What happens in space when a world war breaks out?

Don't miss

The first trailer for the sci-fi thriller “I.S.S.” serves up a horror scenario that sounds gruesome. Does a world war also extend to the space station in outer space?

When the International Space Station (ISS) was created in 1998 as a cooperation between the US NASA, the Russian Roskosmos, the European ESA, the Canadian CSA and the Japanese YAXA, it was in a way a symbol of a new world in which the major powers were no longer in an arms race with each other, but were pursuing common goals that would serve the good of mankind. A lot has happened in the almost 25 years since the launch, both on the ISS, the largest satellite in Earth orbit, and in the world itself. However, in contrast to the developments in space, not all of those on Earth are necessarily to be approved of. Numerous wars and conflicts around the world have set back human security by decades – at least.

When Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine began, the German astronaut Matthias Maurer was on the ISS – and with him three Americans and two Russians. The situation was tense, Maurer recalls, but he finally plucked up the courage to talk to his Russian colleague Anton Shkaplerov about the war.

So it turned out well again, the colleagues found each other through the conversation and sometimes heated discussions. But what would happen if the whole world were engulfed in a blaze of war while the crew on the ISS were completely on their own and unable to reach a consensus? This is the premise of the sci-fi thriller “I.S.S”, which explores this horror scenario in a frightening way, as the recently released first trailer makes clear:

One thing has to be said: it’s a damn scary sight – even in a movie – when the Earth is set on fire by what are most likely nuclear blasts around the globe. What might be going through the mind of a person who has to watch the whole thing helplessly from 400 kilometers above? And what happens when paranoia takes hold and mistrust of one another turns into pure fear? An animal that is pushed into a corner bites. And when humans are reduced to their basic instincts, they are basically no different.

I.S.S.: War at an altitude of 400 kilometers

An American and a Russian group are working together on the ISS on projects and experiments that are intended to benefit humanity. The mood is good, everyone is happy to be part of this expedition and to have been given this unique opportunity to see something that is denied to the majority of people. But then the unthinkable happens: an all-encompassing world war breaks out on Earth. At first everyone is at a loss, but then the two groups receive an order from their respective nations to take control of the ISS – whatever the cost.

Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), Chris Messina (“Argo”), Pilou Asbæk (“Ghost in the Shell”), Masha Mashkova, Costa Ronin and John Gallagher Jr. fight for their lives in the sci-fi thriller “I.S.S.” by director Gabriela Cowperthwaite (“Sergeant Rex – Not Without My Dog”), based on a screenplay by Nick Shafir.

“I.S.S.”, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, opens in US cinemas on January 19, 2024.
