It is still unclear what will happen after “John Wick 4”. However, producer Basil Iwanyk has now explained that the fourth part will be the end of the story.
The finale of “John Wick: Chapter 4” may have surprised many a fan. After all, the movie ends with the unambiguous death of John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves. However, the movie does not make it clear whether only John Wick, the hitman persona, has died because John has finally finished with this life or whether John the person has actually died. So the possibility of making “John Wick 5” was left open.
According to producer Basil Iwanyk, Reeves himself has finished with the series and wanted part 4 to end with Wick’s death. The fifth part will therefore probably take place without Reeves. Iwanyk has now confirmed to ScreenRant that part 5 will tell a new story and will not take place directly after part 4:
“I think what I love about the ending of ‘John Wick 4’ is that it would be an elegant way to end the series if there wasn’t another ‘John Wick’ movie. If there was another ‘John Wick’ movie, which I think there would be, even though we don’t know what it looks like yet, I feel like it would be a completely different book. If these movies are four chapters, you have to blame [the wording] on the metaphor. The ‘John Wick’ movie will be a different book. It wouldn’t be set six months after ‘John Wick 4’.”
Since the universe is huge and provides plenty of material for new stories, as the first spin-off series “The Continental” on Amazon Prime has shown, a fresh approach could also work well without Reeves. The leading actor revealed everything behind the action series in an interview:
John Wick 5 is a long time coming
Iwanyk very much hopes that the “John Wick” series is not over yet, as he is having a lot of fun with the production:
“We just don’t know what it’s going to be yet. But we love spending time together and we just love the process. The more time goes by, the more we miss it. Even though it sounds crazy and these movies are really hard to make, it’s kind of really exciting to make these movies.”
Originally, “John Wick 4” and “John Wick 5” were supposed to be shot back-to-back, but the coronavirus pandemic threw a spanner in the works. Director Chad Stahelski also rethought his creative ideas for the franchise, meaning that we only got the fourth part and the future of part 5 is up in the air. What’s more, Stahelski is already working on two other big projects with “Highlander” and “Ghost of Tshushima” and is likely to be very busy in the near future.
