Oppenheimer and Einstein

Julius Robert Oppenheimer was born in New York City on April 22, 1904. Oppenheimer was an intelligent child, he graduated from the Ethical Culture School of New York with top grades. After that, he continued his education at Harvard University and graduated summa cum laude. Not stopping there, he continued his education at Cambridge University.

There he began his research with atoms at the Cavendish Laboratory in 1925. According to Oppenheimer, the routine in the laboratory was very boring. He decided to go to Göttingen University, Germany, intending to study quantum physics. Oppenheimer received his Doctorate there.

Oppenheimer was a person who did not follow politics, he never used his right to vote in elections until 1934. In 1934 he began to care about politics and international issues. He also likes to set aside 3% of his salary for 2 years to help German physicists who fled from the Nazis.

Oppenheimer, along with Albert Einstein and Leo Szilard, assumed that the Nazis could develop nuclear weapons. After the American government found out about this, Oppenheimer was appointed to carry out the Manhattan Project, namely the American Army’s experiments aimed at utilizing atomic energy for military purposes.

Long story short, the American government was instead focused on Japan, which was its war opponent at that time. On August 6, 1945, a bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and three days later it was dropped on Nagasaki. Oppenheimer expressed his dismay at the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings. President Truman at that time did not like and was angry with Oppenheimer’s messages to the public.

Oppenheimer finally died on February 18, 1967, from throat cancer. This is because Oppenheimer was a heavy smoker. Regardless of Oppenheimer’s pros and cons in creating the atomic bomb, he is one of the most important people in history, especially during World War II.
