For Netflix, the investment in granting Erich Maria Remarque’s novel “All Quiet on the Western Front” a new film adaptation has paid off: The film has now collected four Academy Awards (“Oscars”).
In 23 categories, the U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) highlighted and awarded outstanding achievements in the film industry for the 95th time on Monday night (this time those from 2022). “All Quiet on the Western Front” won four Oscars: Best International Film, Best Cinematography, Film Score and Production Design. The five other nominations of “All Quiet on the Western Front” could not be converted into trophies: Adapted Screenplay, Make-up & Hairstyling, Visual Effects, Sound and in the king category Best Film.
The four winning trophies made it the second most successful film of the evening, behind the adventure fantasy film “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which picked up seven Oscars after eleven nominations, dominating the evening.
The success of “All Quiet on the Western Front” is further enhanced by the fact that the following films, also nominated many times, came away completely empty-handed: “The Banshees of Inisherin” (like “All Quiet on the Western Front” also with 9 nominations), “Elvis” (8 nominations), “The Fabelmans” (7 nominations) and “Tár” (6 nominations). Only “The Whale” still managed to become a “multiple Oscars winner” at this ceremony with two trophies.

Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front Oscars Best Flim Nomination
Netflix highlights that with its win, “Im Westen nichts Neues” brought the first International Film Oscars to Germany in more than 15 years (“Das Leben der Anderen” won in 2007). In addition, the anti-war film rose to the throne of films that were not made in English and still won several Oscars with a total of four Oscars (“Fanny and Alexander,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Parasite” also won four Oscars). Even though “Im Westen nichts Neues” did not win the Oscars for “Best Film”, it is the first German-language film ever to be nominated in this category.
The film “Im Westen nichts Neues” as well as the well-known book from 1928 tell the story of the young German soldier Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer) in the war of position on the Western Front in the First World War. The young soldiers suddenly have to experience first-hand how even their initial euphoria for war turns into horror, suffering and fear as they desperately fight for their lives in the trenches.
Other leading roles are played by Devid Striesow, Daniel Brühl, Albrecht Schuch, Aaron Hilmer, Moritz Klaus, Edin Hasanović, Adrian Grunewald and Thibault de Montalembert. The film was directed by Edward Berger, who also adapted the original together with screenwriters Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell. The film was produced by Edward Berger, Malte Grunert and Daniel Dreifuss from Amusement Park Film on behalf of Netflix.
