Netflix’s ‘The Monkey King‘, the latest animated movie has finally hit the streaming platform. The movie which is being animated by Reel FX, stars Jimmy O. Yang and Jolie Hoang Rappaport playing the lead roles. Along with the duo, Bowen Yang, Jo Koy, Stephanie Hsu, and BD Wong, also voice their respective characters.

The movie, which is directed by Anthony Stacchi follows the journey of a monkey and his quest to achieve immortality, along with his fighting stick. Easier said than done, the like of Dragon King and Jade Emperor try to stop him from getting the same status as them. Here’s everything you need to know about The Monkey King and his adventures.

The Monkey King Review: Birth

Thousands of years ago, at a time when Buddha oversaw the universe, and gods and dragons roamed the planet, a tiny monkey was born out of a rock. Buddha told the Jade Emperor to let the monkey live as he had a special destiny.

Monkey practices every day as he wants to do something special. He promises his monkey brethren that he will protect them and save them from the demons. He steals a Magical Stick from the Dragon King and gains new powers.

Using his new powers, he saves the monkeys and defeats the monster. He realizes that to become an Immortal, he must defeat at least 100 demons to get the attention of the Immortals.

The Monkey King Review: The Ape v. 100 Demons

With 99 demons defeated, the Monkey King is looking for his 100th demon. He comes across a village where he meets Red Girl, a fire demon. He manages to defeat the fire demon, but in the process of doing so, burns down the entire village. 

The Dragon King is upset that Monkey stole the stick from him. He tries to take the stick back from the Monkey but comically fails. Monkey King realizes that for him to be Immortal, he has more to do than defeat 100 demons. 

With the help of Lin, who begs to be his assistant, they head to Hell to cancel out his name from the scrolls of death. He does succeed in doing so, but the Jade Emperor tells him that he is only Half-Immortal.

The Monkey King Review: Ascension 

Lin tells Monkey King that he needs to eat a Pear from a magical garden in order to be Immortal. What Monkey doesn’t know is that Lin secretly made a deal with Dragon King. She promised him the Stick, in exchange for Dragon King saving her village. 

Once again, Monkey King foils Dragon King’s plan to take back his stick. He finds out that in order to become Immortal, he has to drink Wangmu’s Elixir of Immortality. Using the stick, Monkey and Lin make it to the Jade Palace. 

Monkey King manages to drink a sip of the potion and finally becomes Immortal. Lin betrays Monkey King and traps him. She takes the stick and gives it to the Dragon King who reveals his evil plan to take over the world.

The Monkey King Review: Immortality

The Monkey King realizes that he has been betrayed by Lin. He rushes to try and stop Dragon King from unleashing a storm and flooding the entire world. Monkey King manages to get the stick back from Dragon King and the two have an intense fight.

Monkey King finally defeats the Dragon King but loses his morality. He decides that he will take on every Immortal being in the world. The Jade Emperor summons the Buddha, who traps Monkey King in a mountain. Along with the help of Lin, Buddha enlightens Monkey King.

Buddha promises Monkey King that he will release him when he can finally reflect on his wrong-doings and change. 500 years later, Buddha finally frees Monkey King, who is back to defeating demons. He eventually realizes that being on top of the world can only be achieved if the world still exists. 

The Monkey King is now available on Netflix.
